A note from the editor
Spooky season has officially clocked in.
This weekend, Bangor gives you a murder in a church (it's a play, relax), a murder at the circus, a few hundred people doing the Thriller dance around a football track, and Natalie Merchant singing in a room small enough to hear every word.
Monday is Indigenous Peoples' Day. Bangor sits on Penobscot homeland, and this year the city gets its first Indigenous Peoples' Day Film Festival on Sunday. This week's Who to Know is one of the people who helped build the film collective behind it.
One more thing. Tuesday is the last day to register to vote online or by mail. Don't let it sneak up on you.
See you around town.

From the Editor
Somebody in Bangor is getting murdered this weekend. Several somebodies, actually.
On Friday night there's a body at the Hollywood Casino dinner table. A struggling playwright is plotting something on Columbia Street. On Saturday, a circus at Eye Candy is hiding a killer under the big top. By Thursday, four mystery writers at the library will build a brand-new crime from scratch, using clues you hand them on slips of paper. And if you walk downtown after dark, the Historical Society will tell you which old stories never got solved.
Some of the best things this week are new. It's Bangor's first Indigenous Peoples' Day film festival. It's the first Maine Science Awards. A multicultural fair takes over the library on Saturday, in only its second year. Over at Gracie Theatre, Natalie Merchant brings a voice you already know into a room small enough to hear every word.
City Council meets Wednesday this week instead of Monday. Plan around it.
Grab a friend, pick a mystery, and go find out how it ends.

Novio's | 130 Hammond St.
Here's your Saturday. Catch the 2 PM Deathtrap matinee on Columbia Street. Walk two blocks. Sit down at Novio's and argue about the twist over a long dinner.
Novio's is small and quiet, the kind of place where you lower your voice without being asked. At a table or booth, you get a four-course dinner, and you can add a wine pairing. If you'd rather pick and choose, book a seat at the bar and order off the à la carte menu.

The menu changes often, so don't get attached. Expect fresh pasta, good soups, and a kitchen that takes vegetarian and gluten-free diners seriously. The bar is worth the trip on its own, with house cocktails and a deep scotch and bourbon list.
It opened the day after Thanksgiving in 2016 and has stayed one of downtown's best date-night spots ever since. It's not a big-party place. Bring one person you like a lot.
The move this week: Book ahead. The room is small and October weekends fill up.

Maria Girouard | Penobscot historian, organizer, and co-founder of the Sunlight Media Collective
Most of us learned Maine history from a textbook. Maria Girouard has spent her career making sure the Penobscot side of the story gets told by Penobscot people.
She is a citizen of the Penobscot Nation and a historian with a master's degree from the University of Maine. Her thesis dug into the Maine Indian Land Claims, the 1980 settlement that still shapes how the state and the tribes deal with each other today. She is one of the people Maine calls when it needs that history explained.

She has also done the work up close. Girouard served on the Penobscot Tribal Council and directed the tribe's Cultural and Historic Preservation Department. She helped lead the fight to protect the Penobscot River, the tribe's ancestral river, and in 2015 UMaine gave her the Maryann Hartman Award for that work.
Then there's the garden. She co-founded The People's Garden on Indian Island, a community garden built around growing food together.
And she co-founded the Sunlight Media Collective, a group of Wabanaki and non-Wabanaki filmmakers who document the stories that rarely make the evening news. Land, water, rights, and culture, told from a Wabanaki point of view. The collective has made about 150 films. On Sunday, many of them fill the screen at Bangor's first Indigenous Peoples' Day Film Festival.
It's a good weekend to listen.
Say hi: Indigenous Peoples' Day Film Festival, Sunday, 1:30 to 7:30 PM, Unitarian Universalist Church, 120 Park St. Free.

Bangor's therapy dogs just got a $5,000 boost
Some of the hardest-working volunteers in Bangor have four legs.
Pet Partners of Eastern Maine trains and registers therapy animal teams, a handler and their pet, and sends them where people need a lift. Hospital rooms at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center. Local schools. The library's Paws for Tales program, where kids practice reading out loud to a patient, furry listener. It's the only Pet Partners chapter in Maine.
The group has grown fast. In about two years it went from zero to nearly 30 teams around greater Bangor. After the deadly plane crash at Bangor International Airport in January, those teams went to the people who responded. They visited the airport, the Bangor Fire Department, and the Maine Army and Air National Guard.
Last month the Bangor Savings Bank Foundation gave the group $5,000, one of 33 nonprofits to share $120,000 in grants across northern New England. Bangor's NFI North got $5,000 too.
Think your dog has the right personality? Pet Partners says breed doesn't matter. What matters is whether your dog actually wants the job.
