A note from the editor

The waterfront is loud again.

MGK is on the Penobscot tonight. Kid Cudi tomorrow. Somewhere between the last cold snap and this week's weekend forecast, Bangor quietly crossed into summer. Not the calendar kind, the real kind, where you hear sound checks from blocks away and strangers are asking where to park.

Downtown is in motion too. A sandwich shop moved next door and doubled in size. An Indian restaurant that opened in the spring is booking up on OpenTable. The Farmers' Market is back every Sunday at Abbot Square. The harness track is running Friday afternoons. There's a lot happening in a small city, and it's all worth paying attention to.

This week we're spotlighting Kara Hay of Penquis, a Bangor-based leader who has been quietly doing some of the most consequential work in the region for over a decade. We've got food news, good news, and a fresh Queen City Quiz to round things out.

Good to be here. See you on the other side of the weekend.

THIS WEEKEND IN BANGOR

The waterfront opens its season with two big nights.

If you've been waiting for the Maine Savings Amphitheater to finally feel like itself again, this is the weekend. Two major shows hit the riverfront back to back.

Friday, June 5: MGK's Lost Americana Tour gets things going at 7 p.m. He's joined by Wiz Khalifa and De'Wayne. Expect a packed Front Street and a loud night on the Penobscot.

Saturday, June 6: Kid Cudi brings the Rebel Ragers Tour at 6:30 p.m., with M.I.A. and Big Boi on the bill. It's a stacked lineup for anyone who came of age in the early 2010s. Bangor Daily News

Both shows are general admission on the lawn. The box office opens at 3 p.m. on show days. Parking is available at the Pickering Square Garage and along Front Street. No outside food, drinks, or lawn chairs.

And on Sunday morning, slow it down.

The Bangor Farmers' Market runs every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Abbot Square, across from the Bangor Public Library on Harlow Street. Local vegetables, meats, baked goods, flowers, and made-to-order food. A good reset after a concert weekend. Bangorfarmersmarket

Also on Friday: Harness racing returns to Hollywood Casino Raceway at Bass Park, with post time at 12:10 p.m. Low-key, local, and genuinely fun if you've never been.

Bangor Sandwich Co. just got a whole lot bigger.

Bangor Sandwich Company has moved into a new storefront at 1 Central St., just steps from its old spot on Hammond. The new space is roughly double the size, with a significantly larger kitchen. Bangor Daily News

Owners Joe and Jen Ramos bought the business in 2022 and have been building it steadily since. The expanded kitchen made room for nine new menu items, including sandwiches on homemade focaccia, new wraps, and new salads. The existing menu of hot and cold sandwiches, pizza, and ice cream stays put. Bangor Daily News

Bangor Sandwich Co Facebook

What sets this place apart goes beyond the bread. The Ramos family hires mostly high school and college students, along with young people exiting a local drug and alcohol rehab program, and trains them to take on real leadership roles. It's a lunch spot that's also a quiet good-news story. Bangor Daily News

Hours remain 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

Also worth knowing: If you haven't made it to Rasa yet, it's past time. Rasa Indian Cuisine has been open since late March at 175 Exchange St. in downtown Bangor, serving a lunch buffet from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner from 4 to 9 or 10 p.m. seven days a week.

Rasa Indian Cuisine Facebook

The menu features South Indian dishes including dosas, biryani, and fresh naan made in a clay oven, plus a bar with cocktails and Sai Lager on draft from Oxbow Brewing. It's been booking up. Reservations available on OpenTable.

Kara Hay, President and CEO, Penquis

Most people in Bangor have heard of Penquis. Fewer could tell you what it actually does, or who leads it.

Kara Hay has been at the helm of Maine's largest community action agency since 2014, overseeing a $60 million organization focused on helping individuals and families become safe, stable, connected, and financially secure. That mission runs through housing, transportation, financial services, early childhood education, and substance use support, among other things. THE ORG

The breadth is hard to summarize. On any given day, Penquis touches the lives of roughly 5,000 people across the region. Penquis

Hay came to the role through frontline work, first as a family therapist and child development specialist, then as a casework supervisor with the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. She saw the downstream costs of financial instability up close before she ever ran a nonprofit.

Her leadership has earned national recognition. She received the National Lyndon Baines Johnson Leadership Award from the National Community Action Partnership, one of the most significant honors in the community action field. NeighborWorks America has recognized her twice. Piscataquis Observer

This week, Penquis is participating in NeighborWorks Week through June 7, with a national theme of "Creating Homes, Building America." It's a timely spotlight on work that never really stops. WABI

Hay doesn't make a lot of noise. She just shows up and does the work. That's worth knowing.

Penquis is at 262 Harlow St. in Bangor. More at penquis.org.

Sixty veterans came home to Bangor. It looked like this.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, more than 60 Maine veterans traveled to Washington, D.C., with Honor Flight Maine to visit memorials and Arlington National Cemetery. They returned Sunday to Bangor International Airport, where family and friends met them with cheers and signs for a homecoming many had waited decades to receive. Maine News Center

Vietnam veteran Allan Saul was among those who made the trip. He noted that he simply hadn't been able to tell people what he'd done when he came home from war the first time. The airport welcome was a different kind of return. Maine News Center

Air Force veteran David Landry, who also served in Vietnam, described the experience as something for which there simply aren't words. Foxbangor

The next Honor Flight Maine trip from Bangor is scheduled for October 16 to 18. The program is entirely free for veterans and runs on donations. If you'd like to sponsor a spot, honorflightmaine.org has the details. Honor Flight Maine

Also: The Bangor Housing Authority is moving forward on a project called Home For Good, which will add at least 40 units of permanent, supportive housing for people experiencing homelessness in the city. The project received federal authorization this week to proceed with environmental review. Bangor, ME
