A note from the editor
This might be the busiest Halloween weekend Bangor has had in years.
Saturday afternoon, kids in costumes take over downtown for trick or treat while the zombies shuffle through at the same time. Saturday night, a cast of volunteers tells ghost stories among the graves at Mount Hope. And all weekend, Bangor hosts its very first comedy festival.
This week's Who to Know is the comic headlining Friday night. Years ago, he was the guy keeping the crowd laughing before midnight movies at the Bangor Mall.
Two other things before you go. A Saturday morning tradition that's been running for more than 30 years just got new owners. And Thursday, October 29, is your last day to vote early. Don't let it sneak up on you.
See you around town.

From the Editor
This is the week Bangor gives things away.
On Saturday afternoon, dozens of downtown shops will hand candy to anyone in a costume. Down the street, a church will open its trunks, and a crew of bikers will fill bags at Season’s. On Sunday, The Furniture Gallery does it again, and every dollar dropped in the bucket goes to sick kids at Children’s Miracle Network.
The giving doesn’t stop at candy. The library’s book sale lets you fill a bag for a few bucks, and every sale keeps the shelves stocked. At Red Rabbit, the clothes you don’t wear become someone else’s favorite sweater. Monsters at the Museum is a party with a purpose, too. And early Saturday, before the zombies hit the streets, volunteers will rake leaves and scrub graffiti so downtown looks its best before the snow.
If you’ve got a free morning, grab a rake. If you’ve got a free afternoon, grab a costume. Either way, somebody will be glad you showed up.
See you out there,
The editor

Bangor's European Market
117 Buck St. | Saturdays, 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM
Tucked behind a greenhouse on Buck Street is the oldest farmers market in Bangor. Plenty of people who have lived here for years have never been.
This Saturday is a good day to fix that.
For more than 30 years, Ingrid Perkins and Rick Gilbert have hosted the market every Saturday morning. They got the idea after visiting a farmers market in Budapest. Vendors sell outside in the summer and move inside the greenhouse when it gets cold. That greenhouse, Sunnyside, goes back to 1927. Rick's aunt and uncle opened it.

You'll find baked goods, meats, seafood, produce, crafts, and food from all over the world. Next door, Ingrid's shop sells German chocolates, ornaments, and other imported treats. If you're lucky, you'll meet Rex, the couple's German shepherd.
The market has quietly launched a lot of local businesses. Vendors started here before opening their own shops, including Dream Charm Bar in Bangor and Baked by Joy in Hampden.
Now Rick and Ingrid are retiring. They're handing everything over to sisters Serine and Kari Steines, who have been regulars for more than 20 years. The sisters plan to keep the market just as it is. They'll keep the German favorites in the shop and add new Scandinavian goods for Christmas.
That makes this Saturday one of their first as owners. Stop in, say hello, and welcome them.
Longtime vendor Sarah Creamer has the best advice: "Go early and come hungry."

Ray Harrington, Comedian
If you went to a midnight movie at the Bangor Mall between 2007 and 2010, you may have already seen Ray Harrington's act. He was the guy who kept the crowd laughing while everyone waited for The Dark Knight or the next Harry Potter.
Friday night, he headlines Bangor's first comedy festival.
Harrington grew up in Maine and studied at the New England School of Communications at Husson University. He graduated in 2010 with degrees in radio broadcasting and marketing communications. He also met his wife, Kaleena, on that campus. He once said it was "beautiful AND scary" how much of who he is came from there.

After college, he took his act to the comedy clubs of Boston and Providence. It worked.
Since then, he's performed on Conan and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. His documentary, Be A Man, won best documentary at the LA Comedy Festival and then landed on Hulu. His two albums, The Worst Is Over and Overwhelmed, both debuted at No. 1 on Amazon. Overwhelmed also topped the Billboard comedy chart.
His comedy is personal. He talks about his life, his family, and the stuff that keeps him up at night. Fans love how fast he is when he riffs with the crowd. He lives in Rhode Island now. Bangor still claims him.
See him: Friday, 8 PM, Lancaster Room at Hollywood Casino. Tickets at BangorComedyFestival.com.

A river landing named for a 97-year-old neighbor
On Monday, Orrington broke ground on a new public boat landing on the Penobscot River. It's named after Alan Baker, a 97-year-old Orrington resident and the former owner and publisher of the Ellsworth American.
Baker helped push for better river access in town for years. His idea was simple. A boat landing should be a place where people want to spend time, even if they never launch a boat.
So this one will have more than a ramp. It will have a playground and a picnic area too.
The landing is going in on McGinn Road in South Orrington. Right now, there aren't many ways to reach the river from the east bank between Milford and Castine. This adds one. More than $2 million came from state grants, town funds, and the Greenfield Environmental Trust.
Planning started six years ago. The landing should open in June 2027.
How does Baker feel about having his name on it? "It's a little bit daunting," he said. "I'm not used to that."
Husson grads, telling their own stories
Ray Harrington isn't the only Husson grad doing big things this week.
The Husson Horizons podcast is back for season three. Each week, Director of Career Services Kate Axelsen Foster sits down with a Husson alum to talk about campus life, the jobs that followed, and the moments at Husson that mattered most.
Season three kicked off October 13 with Janessa Bishop '25. She went from early-career journalist to Good Morning Maine anchor in about a year.
New episodes drop every Tuesday through November 17:
Oct. 20: Renard Walker '26G, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner
Oct. 27: Connor Archer '21, '21G, founder and CEO of The Courageous Steps Project
Nov. 3: Stephen Coston '16, founder of Stay Bar Harbor Hotel Group
Nov. 10: Jacob Keller '25, '26G, career counselor at Penobscot Job Corps
Nov. 17: Courtney Churchill '14, '16G, physical therapist at Saco Bay Physical Therapy
The show is made by students and staff at the New England School of Communications, the same program Harrington graduated from. Seasons one and two are up too.

She was born in Carmel, worked at a store on Main Street in downtown Bangor, and is buried in Bangor. Actress Myrna Fahey became a TV star in the 1950s and 60s. In 1960, she starred opposite Vincent Price in which horror movie?

A new late-night spot is coming to Main Street. Burgers & Bad Decisions plans to open in early November at 68 Main St., the old Taste of India space. Owner Shianne Levesque plans to open at 5 AM and close around midnight, a little later on weekends. Expect all-day breakfast, loaded burgers, a vegetarian version of everything, and a few arcade games. Kids eat free from the kids menu on Mondays, and first responders, police, and veterans get a discount. She used to work at the Penobscot County Jail and remembers how hard it was to find a meal after a long shift. More here.
The Kenduskeag Stream wall is getting rebuilt. The City Council approved a $3.8 million contract to rebuild the stone retaining wall at Hamlin Park, between Central and Hammond streets. The wall is almost 100 years old. Granite blocks have come loose, and the tides are wearing it down. The new wall will run about 115 feet and stand about 26 feet tall on average. No start date yet. Expect some construction along the stream when it does. More here.
Meet the Opera House ghosts. Penobscot Theatre ensemble member Ben Layman leads Haunted Bangor Opera House Tours next week. You'll hear about the building's three resident ghosts and see backstage. Thursday, October 29, and Friday, October 30, at 8:45 PM, 131 Main St. The tour includes stairs.
