Good morning, Bangor. It's a food truck kind of weekend, and we're not complaining.

THIS WEEKEND IN BANGOR

Sunday is the main event.

The Furniture Gallery is hosting Food Truck Extravaganza 3.0 on Sunday, July 27 at 614 Broadway, from 11am to 3pm, and the lineup is the strongest one yet. Ten trucks on-site. No cover. Just bring cash and an appetite.

Here's who's pulling up: Brick & Embers, Bumpy's Kettle Corn, Curbside Eats & Treats, Dell's Lemonade, King's Concessions, Mad Hatter Cafe, Mainely Tacos, No Bones Grill, Rizza's Kitchen, and The Thai Lotus.

That's wood-fired pizza, Thai street food, tacos, BBQ, kettle corn, fresh-squeezed lemonade, and more all in one Broadway parking lot. Go hungry. Go early if you want first pick at the window. And bring the kids — this is the kind of Sunday afternoon that Bangor does well.

FROM THE EDITOR

Tall Ships are coming to Bangor.

Starting Tuesday, the Penobscot River's historic 4-Port Loop brings vessels, dock-side tours, and a full week of America's 250th celebrations right to the waterfront. It's one of those things that stops you mid-commute. You look out toward the river and there's a Tall Ship. That doesn't get old.

The rest of the week keeps pace. Four straight nights of concerts at Maine Savings Amphitheater — Billy Currington and Kip Moore on Friday, Mötley Crüe with Tesla and Extreme on Saturday, Lil Wayne on Tuesday, Men at Work on Wednesday. You could spend the whole week at the waterfront and not repeat yourself once.

Away from the amphitheater, the week has real range. There's a free organ recital at St. John's on Thursday evening — Ray Cornils performing on Maine's largest 19th-century pipe organ, no ticket required, 7:30pm, and it will be worth every minute. There's a burlesque brunch at Eye Candy on Sunday morning. A Revolutionary War walking tour through Mount Hope Cemetery on Saturday. A sci-fi book club at BookSpace on Wednesday night. A free backpack giveaway for students on Sunday afternoon. The Bangor Band plays the waterfront on Tuesday.

This is a week that goes in a lot of directions, and very little of it overlaps. There's room to do more than one thing. Take advantage of it.

See you out there.

Brick & Embers | Wood-Fired Pizza Trailer

There's a moment when you walk up to the Brick & Embers window and the smoke hits you. That's the moment you know you made the right call.

Brick & Embers is Bangor's own mobile wood-fired pizza trailer, and the setup is refreshingly simple: pick your five toppings from their menu (or your own list), and they fire them up fresh, unlimited, right out of the window. No ordering theater. No waiting on a number. Just really good pizza coming out of a very hot oven.

Facebook

They do catering for weddings and corporate events across all of Maine, and they keep a rotating retail schedule in the greater Bangor area during the warmer months. The move? Pepperoni with hot honey. They basically say so themselves on their website, and they're right.

You can catch them Sunday at Food Truck Extravaganza 3.0. Follow their schedule at brickandembers.com and find them on Instagram at @brickandembersme so you don't miss them the rest of the summer.

Chris Martin | Mainely Tacos

Chris Martin grew up in Arizona, where good Mexican food is a given. When he moved to Maine in 2016, he packed everything except the one thing he missed most.

"This is the food that we can't get here," he told the Bangor Daily News when he opened his truck back in 2022. "When I go home to visit, I bring all kinds of this stuff back with me."

So he stopped waiting and started cooking. Mainely Tacos launched out of a bright red truck in Hampden, serving fish tacos made with fresh Maine haddock, lobster quesadillas, Mexican street corn slathered in cotija and chipotle lime, and churros. The community response was immediate. He was running out of food every day.

Facebook

Martin has spent years in restaurants and catering, and the pandemic killed his original plan for a Hampden sit-down spot. The truck was the pivot. And it worked well enough that Mainely Tacos Dos is now open at 64 Main Street in downtown Bangor, the kind of full-circle move that food truck dreams are made of.

You can catch the truck Sunday at Food Truck Extravaganza 3.0. For the downtown location, find them on Facebook or just walk down Main Street.

His own standard for great food: "I judge a restaurant by its salsa. If it makes me sweat by the second chip, it's good."

The community has until July 31 to save Together Place.

Together Place, Bangor's only peer-run daytime recovery center, announced this week that it will close its doors on July 31 unless emergency bridge funding comes through. The center lost state funding it had relied on since 2016, leaving a gap of roughly $300,000.

Since mid-May, more than 1,500 people have walked through those doors looking for connection, a meal, and a safe place to land. Together Place offers free meals and a daytime space for people in recovery and unhoused residents, especially important during the heat of summer. When it closes, there's nothing else like it in Bangor.

The organization is asking individuals, businesses, and foundations to step in right now. Every bit of bridge funding buys time while they work toward a longer-term solution.
