The fair is back. The amphitheater is rocking. And somewhere in Bass Park right now, someone is walking their goat past a doughboy stand while another is viewing a photo they hope wins a cash prize. That's Bangor in August, and we are here for it.

THIS WEEKEND IN BANGOR

The Bangor State Fair runs through August 8. If you haven't been yet, this is the weekend to go. Rides, food, agricultural exhibits, a demolition derby, an antique car show, and more are all happening at Bass Park, 515 Main St. Fair hours vary by day, so check the schedule at bangorstatefair.com before you head out. Tickets are available at the gate.

Joe Bonamassa and Gov't Mule — tonight at the Amp. If you've been sitting on tickets to this one, tonight is the night. Both acts hit the Maine Savings Amphitheater stage Friday, July 31 at 7 p.m. Bonamassa is one of the best blues-rock guitarists working today, and Gov't Mule is no opener. This is a real show.

The Harvey Gamage is in town — and she already sailed. The historic wooden schooner departed Bucksport early this morning for a day trip up the Penobscot, docking at Bangor's Cruise Ship Dock for lunch. If you missed it, watch for her schedule at sailmaine.com for future trips. Worth putting on the calendar.

Zillman Art Museum — five new shows. The museum opened five new exhibitions on June 1 and they run through September 5. It's free, it's air-conditioned, and it's on the UMaine campus. Open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

FROM THE EDITOR

The Bangor State Fair is running, and if you know, you know. Demolition derbies, tractor pulls, harness racing at dusk. Joe Bonamassa at the Amphitheater Friday night. Hank Williams Jr. Saturday. It's a lot of city for one week.

And then Sunday, the river takes over. The Harvey Gamage sails up the Penobscot on Friday and docks for the afternoon, and by Sunday, the waterfront is full — the world's largest 3D printed boat, Cornish rowing gigs offering free lessons, Sailing Ships Maine tied up at the docks. All of it free, all of it just there if you show up. Then at 8:45 p.m., three hundred drones rise over the river for America's 250th birthday. Find a spot on the riverwalk and look up.

The rest of the week is quieter and just as good. A new UMVA exhibition opens Monday. A free Wabanaki and Salt Bay Chamberfest concert happens Thursday at noon. Walking tours, storytime, trivia, karaoke, chess in Brewer every Wednesday. The full listing is below.

It's food truck season, which means The Lobstah Buoy is open and the line is worth it.

Greater Bangor's original fresh-shucked food truck is in its 10th season, parked at 268 Odlin Road right across from Tim Hortons, open weekdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Food Network has called it one of the best food trucks in the country. Bangor Metro readers voted it the best food truck in town. The regulars just call it lunch.

The lobster is fresh Maine, never frozen. You can get a Baby Buoy (2 oz.) if you're testing the waters, a quarter pound if you're hungry, or a half pound if you're committed. There are also crab rolls, whole belly clam baskets, fish and chips, scallops, and shrimp. If someone in your group won't eat seafood, there are burgers too, and the fries are fresh cut.

This is what August in Bangor tastes like. Don't skip it.

Benjamin Gregory and Erin Doughty, The Lobstah Buoy

Ten years ago, Ben Gregory and Erin Doughty parked a food truck on Odlin Road and started shucking lobster. They had no idea they were building one of the most beloved spots in Bangor.

The Lobstah Buoy is in its 10th season now. The Food Network has called it one of the best food trucks in the country. Bangor Metro readers voted it the best food truck in the city. And on any given weekday, there's a line of people who didn't need anyone to tell them that.

What makes Ben and Erin stand out isn't the accolades. It's that they've stayed exactly who they are. Fresh Maine lobster, never frozen. Friendly faces at the window. Honest food at a truck that's been in the same spot, doing the same thing, getting a little better every year.

In 2020, business had grown enough that they upgraded to a new, enclosed truck. "The business has been growing and we've gotten busier and busier," Ben told WABI at the time. "We got written up by the Food Network and ever since then it's really taken off."

That was six years ago. They're still here. And this summer, if you want to know what a decade of doing something right looks like, you'll find it at 268 Odlin Road.

Every year the Bangor State Fair runs a photo competition, and this year's edition is worth talking about. Here's what makes it good: every photo entered goes on exhibit, whether it wins or not. You don't need to place to have your work seen by thousands of fairgoers.

Winners take home cash prizes. Entries could be color or black and white, and the contest was open to everyone, all ages, no separate youth category this year.

Online registration already closed, and in-person entry was July 27, so the submissions are in and on display now. If you're heading to the fair this week, look for the photo exhibit. There's always at least one shot that stops you in your tracks.
