Summer doesn't go quietly in Bangor. It goes out with ZZ Top.
That's one way to frame this Labor Day weekend. The other way is to notice everything happening around the main event: the 63rd Annual Labor Day Road Race Monday morning, the Fire of 1911 Walking Tour Saturday evening, the free outdoor market at Bass Park, the musicians showing up at 2 Feet Sunday afternoon just to play. The First Friday Art Walk tonight. A free PTC reading. A drag birthday show. A 1974 horror-comedy-rock-musical screened for free in a shop on a Sunday night.

Labor Day weekend in Bangor is a specific kind of thing.
It's ZZ Top and George Thorogood on the same stage at the amphitheater Sunday night. It's the 63rd Annual Labor Day Road Race sending a few hundred people through downtown Monday morning, carrying on a tradition that started before most of us were born.
And then, in the same week, it's a free one-night reading of a play about a woman who changed how we measure the universe. It's the first gathering of a new ASL Social Hour at the library. It's Canvases of Change, an afternoon of art and music at BPL put on in support of Bangor's homeless community.
That's the thing about this city. The big moments and the quiet ones don't compete with each other. They just happen side by side, and both of them are worth showing up for.
Also worth showing up for: Adulting 101 on Wednesday, which is technically about meal planning on a budget, and feels, spiritually, like something we could all use right now.

Carl Birmingham and Brittany LeVasseur came into downtown Bangor with 40 years of combined food industry experience and a clear idea of what they wanted to do. Carl cooks from scratch. That phrase gets thrown around a lot, but here it means something: he builds every element of a dish by hand, sources local product as much as he can, and resists the shortcuts. Brittany runs the floor and the cocktail program, and by most accounts, the drinks are worth ordering on their own.
The menu reflects that combination of confidence and care. Beef Carpaccio with arugula, blue cheese, walnuts, and blackberries. Drunken Noodles with shrimp, pork belly, and fresh basil. These aren't safe, crowd-pleasing choices. They're the kind of dishes someone puts on a menu because they know what they're doing.
The space matches the food. Downtown without trying too hard. Staff that knows the room.
For a long weekend that starts with a road race and ends with ZZ Top, it makes a solid Friday or Saturday night anchor.
Dr. Marie Robinson, Superintendent, Bangor School Department
Marie Robinson's second year in Bangor started the way nobody planned.
In the spring, workers found asbestos in the ceiling of Fairmount School, the oldest building in the district at more than a hundred years old. What followed was weeks of community debate, competing proposals, a scrapped plan that drew pushback from parents, and eventually a unanimous School Committee vote to move Fairmount's fourth and fifth graders into a secured wing of Bangor High School. School started Tuesday. The kids are there now.

Robinson came to Bangor in July 2024 after six years leading Katahdin Schools up in Medway, where she'd achieved a 100 percent graduation rate for three of those years. Before Maine, she spent fifteen years teaching and coaching in Philadelphia-area schools, eventually becoming a building principal. She has a Ph.D. in Education and has lived in Maine since 2016.
The Fairmount situation landed in her lap less than two years into the job. She's been candid about what it exposed. "There's been deferred maintenance based on budgetary considerations and multiple schools need multiple upgrades, and that's where we are right now," she told the School Committee in May. Engineers have since put the cost of a full Fairmount repair at nearly $62 million, far above early estimates. A decision on whether to pursue it is coming.
Through the scramble, parents noticed she listened. "I want to thank you for listening to the community, for slowing down the process," one Fairmount parent told the committee at the final vote.
The new wing at Bangor High has its own entrance, its own bathrooms, a cafeteria carved out of a former locker hallway. It is, by every account, a temporary solution. What happens to Fairmount after that is the bigger question, and Robinson is the one who'll have to answer it.
Bangor's public parks just got more permanent. Broadway Park, Chapin Park, and Davenport Park have been added to the city's official list of historic sites, following a unanimous City Council vote. Broadway and Chapin date to the 1830s and were later redesigned by Boston landscape architect Frank Blaisdell. Davenport Park, on Main Street, is home to the Battleship Maine Monument, which is already listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The historic designation helps protect all three from future road projects or federal development in the surrounding areas.
Brewer High School students now ride the Community Connector for free. Starting September 1, any Brewer High School student can board any Community Connector route at no charge. To school, to work, to after-school activities, wherever the bus goes. No fare required. The program was announced by the City of Bangor to help students get around without depending on a car.
The new YMCA is taking shape on Main Street. Construction on the Cathy Gero Bangor Region YMCA has been picking up speed through the summer. The three-story, 82,000-square-foot building is starting to take visible form at the site near Davis Court and Talbot Park, with passersby able to see real structure rising in recent weeks. Salvation Army Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen, 65 South Park St. Meals Monday through Friday, 11:30am to 1pm. Food pantry Wednesdays and Fridays, 9 to 11am (walk-in). 207-535-9572.
Manna Ministry, 95 Center St. Hot meals Monday through Friday, 4 to 5pm. Food pantry Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 3 to 4pm.
Brick Church, 126 Union St. Meals Monday through Friday, 4:30 to 5:30pm. Clothes and showers also available Tuesday and Thursday, 10am to 2pm.
Bangor Area Homeless Shelter, 263 Main St. Soup kitchen daily at 11:45am. Food pantry Sunday and Tuesday, 1 to 4pm (one visit per month).
Bangor Food Pantry, 28 High St. (at Hammond Street Congregational Church). Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:30am to noon. Bangor residents only.
