September is doing what September does in Bangor. The air went cool this week, the leaves are starting to think about it, and some people drove a long way to be here this Sunday.
That's not unusual. What is unusual, at least if you step back and look at the week whole, is what else is going on alongside it. There's a 250-year-old document at the library that helped start a country. There's a Maine author launching a thriller rooted in something that happened here in 1937. There are Civil War soldiers buried up on the hill, and a walking tour to help you find them. There's a NASA event at the waterfront, which is a sentence you don't get to write very often.
The carnival is free. The pet parade is Sunday. The beer is local. And somewhere in there, a room full of people is going to learn mahjong for the first time on a Wednesday night at DREAM, which might be the most Bangor thing in the whole issue.
A lot is happening this week. Get out there.

Geaghan's Pub & Craft Brewery

Geaghan's has been on Main Street since 1975. John and Arline Geaghan opened what they called John Geaghan's Roundhouse Restaurant, named for the railroad roundhouse nearby. A lot of the first customers worked there. Irish decor and tradition crept in over the years, and what grew out of it is now one of the oldest pubs in Maine.
The brewing side started in 2011. Geaghan Brothers Brewing Company runs a production facility in Brewer, across the bridge, and their beers are on draft across the state and in cans at the pub. The signature is Dad's Oatmeal Stout, named for John Geaghan Sr., who grew up in Bangor, served in World War II, and came home wanting to build something for his family. The Captain Molly Kool IPA honors North America's first female licensed Atlantic sea captain, who had ties to the Bangor area, and comes in at 7.5% ABV and 70 IBUs. Big County is brewed entirely with ingredients from Aroostook County, using hops from Aroostook Hops in Westfield and malts from Maine Malt House in Mapleton.
The food is what you want it to be. Wings done four ways. Fresh-cut fries. A Maine lobster salad. A chicken quesadilla that shows up on a lot of tables. The cheesecake is made from scratch with the family's mother's recipe. She cooked every day for eleven kids. It's the kind of dessert that's been tested.
Geaghan's is the kind of place that has a regular in every corner seat. It earns that.

Jamie Tinker and Jennifer Millar, SK Tours of Maine
The Thomas Hill Standpipe has been on the Bangor skyline since 1897. Jamie Tinker grew up playing baseball in the park at its base. When he read IT for the first time, he knew every road, every corner, every block. Derry was already his city.
Jamie and his wife Jennifer Millar are both lifelong Bangor residents and Constant Readers, which is what Stephen King calls his most devoted fans. In 2019, Jamie took over SK Tours of Maine from his father Stu, who had run Bett's Bookstore, the longtime Bangor institution that once kept the most complete Stephen King collection in the country. The family has been in the King business for more than 30 years.
Today, SK Tours is the only guided, narrated tour of King's "Derry" in Bangor. Jamie and Jennifer take visitors through the real-life places behind the novels: the standpipe, the storm drain on Jackson Street, King's former home on Broadway with its famous bat-and-dragon gate, Mount Hope Cemetery, and the storefronts that show up in one book after another. The tours run two and a half hours. Some 4,000 people come through their business every year, from across the country and around the world.
This week, Jamie and Jennifer are featured in Tom Deady's new book, "Still Floating: 40 Years of Pennywise," which launches Friday at The Emporium. They're part of the story the book is celebrating.
"Every person leaves with an appreciation for what the Kings have done for our community," Jamie has said. That's the core of what SK Tours does. Not just King tourism. King as a way to understand how much Bangor has given him, and how much has come back.

A fresh round of grants lands locally. The Bangor Savings Bank Foundation awarded $120,000 in grants this week to 33 nonprofits across Maine and New Hampshire. Pet Partners of Eastern Maine, based in Bangor, is among the recipients. The grants support food access, housing stability, youth development, and other essential services across the region.
Three Bangor parks are now officially historic. The City Council has approved historic site designation for Broadway Park, Chapin Park, and Davenport Park. Broadway and Chapin parks have been public green spaces since the 1830s. Davenport Park holds the Battleship Maine Monument, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The designation protects all three from federal road projects and development in the surrounding areas.
Maine earns a spot on the New York Times' best list. The Times published its annual 50 best restaurants in America list this week. Portland's Douro, a Portuguese-inspired seafood spot that opened last October, is the only Maine restaurant on it. The writers called it a place where coastal Portugal meets coastal Maine. It's the kind of recognition that puts the whole state in front of new eyes.

Salvation Army Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen, 65 South Park St. Meals Monday through Friday, 11:30am to 1pm. Food pantry Wednesdays and Fridays, 9 to 11am (walk-in). 207-535-9572.
Manna Ministry, 95 Center St. Hot meals Monday through Friday, 4 to 5pm. Food pantry Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 3 to 4pm.
Brick Church, 126 Union St. Meals Monday through Friday, 4:30 to 5:30pm. Clothes and showers also available Tuesday and Thursday, 10am to 2pm.
Bangor Area Homeless Shelter, 263 Main St. Soup kitchen daily at 11:45am. Food pantry Sunday and Tuesday, 1 to 4pm (one visit per month).
Bangor Food Pantry, 28 High St. (at Hammond Street Congregational Church). Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:30am to noon. Bangor residents only.
Bangor Region YMCA, 17 Second St. Food pantry Tuesdays 6 to 8am, Thursdays 6 to 7:30pm, Saturdays 12:30 to 2:30pm.
