A note from the editor

Issue No. 5. Hard to believe we're already here.

If you're new this week, welcome. You found us at a good time. Spring is finally doing what spring is supposed to do in Maine, which means the city is shaking loose and people are actually going outside again. Good timing to start paying attention.

For those of you who've been here since the beginning, thank you for sticking around and for telling people about the newsletter. Every new subscriber this week came because someone passed it along. That's how this thing grows, and it means a lot.

This week we've got a food drive you can participate in without leaving your front step, a new downtown bar worth checking out, some genuinely good news about a Bangor institution, and the usual mix of people, places, and things worth knowing about.

Let's get into it.

Ken, the editor

THIS WEEKEND IN BANGOR

The letter carriers are coming. Put a bag by the door.

This Saturday is the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, the largest single-day food collection in the country. The way it works is simple: leave a bag of nonperishable, unexpired food next to your mailbox, and your letter carrier picks it up.

Last year, greater Bangor contributed more than 13,000 pounds of food, enough for over 10,000 meals. This year's goal is bigger. If you have a can of beans, a box of pasta, or a jar of peanut butter that's been sitting in the cabinet since November, Saturday is its moment.

The BSO is bringing 2,000 kids to the Collins Center.

Monday morning, the Bangor Symphony Orchestra hosts its Young People's Concert at Collins Center for the Arts. More than 2,000 students from across the greater Bangor area will be in those seats for a live performance featuring Benjamin Britten's "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra."

The narrator is Jen Shepard, artistic director of Penobscot Theatre Company. The soloist is Ronan Sands of Eddington, a high school cellist who won the Maine High School Concerto Competition. He'll perform the opening movement of Elgar's Cello Concerto. It's a school-day event, not open to the public, but it's worth knowing it's happening. Two thousand kids seeing live orchestral music is a good thing for this city.

Rizza’s Kitchen | Various Locations

Food truck season is here. Start with Rizza's Kitchen.

Rizza's Kitchen is a local Asian cuisine food truck, and their tagline says it well: fresh and authentic flavors that remind you of home. They do catering, private chef services, and office lunches in addition to the truck, so they're worth bookmarking whether you're hunting them down at an event or planning something bigger. Graduation season is coming up fast, and they're actively booking parties. Find them on Instagram and Facebook at Rizza's Kitchen, or call 207-404-6845.

William Bell, Bangor High School

William Bell teaches orchestra at Bangor High School. He also keeps bees.

Those two things have more in common than you'd think. Both require patience, attention, and a willingness to show up consistently even when nothing dramatic is happening. Bell has been beekeeping for a few years on his own, noticed that some schools around the state had built programs around it, and decided Bangor High should be one of them. He applied for a grant through Maine Bee Wellness, got it, and last spring the Bangor High Beekeeping Club was born.

The club meets every Tuesday from April through November, hives and all, on school grounds near the soccer field. Students inspect the colonies, test for mites, and monitor whether the bees are healthy enough to risk swarming. This spring, the hives came back clean.

Bell is matter-of-fact about why any of this matters. One out of every three bites of food you eat was pollinated by a honeybee. If honeybees struggle, so does the food supply. He's not dramatic about it. He just thinks students should know.

The club draws kids from all over, some environmentally focused, some interested in animal husbandry, some who just wanted to try something different. Bell seems genuinely happy about all of them.

"It's been a blast so far," he said. "I hope it keeps going for a good long time."

All Souls is rebuilding, and nearly paid for it already.

All Souls Congregational Church at 10 Broadway has been talking about renovating its auxiliary wing for decades. This week they announced they're finally doing it, and the fundraising is nearly complete. The congregation has raised close to $2.8 million of the $3 million goal since starting the campaign in February. The church has added about 50 new members in the last two to three years, now sitting at 326 people in the pews. Co-pastor Chad Poland told the Bangor Daily News they see new faces almost every week. The renovation will replace an uninsulated 1954 addition that wastes half its energy, adding a second floor and making the building fully accessible. Construction is underway. Sunday services continue as usual at 10 a.m.

In a stretch of news that can feel relentlessly heavy, a community institution filling pews and paying its bills is worth a mention.

Bangor High has a beekeeping club. It's better than it sounds.

Orchestra teacher William Bell applied for a grant through Maine Bee Wellness last year, got it, and built something genuinely useful out of it. The Bangor High Beekeeping Club meets every Tuesday from April through November, including summer, with hives on school grounds near the soccer field. Students do real work: inspecting hives, testing for varroa mites, monitoring colony health. Their hives came back clean this spring.

Bell puts the stakes plainly. One out of every three bites of food you eat was pollinated by a honeybee. The club exists, in part, to make sure students understand that.

The kids seem to get it. Tenth grader Simon Adams has been keeping bees on his own for two and a half years. Eleventh grader Eddie Grey called it the only club that directly gives back to nature and the community.

Three colonies of stinging insects next to the soccer field. Somehow nobody thought it was a crazy idea, and it worked out fine.

Bangor was named after a hymn tune. But how did that happen?

In 1791, pastor Seth Noble traveled to Boston to register the new settlement's official name. He planned to call it Sunbury. Something changed his mind. What caused Seth Noble to name the town Bangor?
