Bass Park After Dark is back Saturday, and it might be the most fun you can have for free this weekend. Head to the Cross Insurance Center grounds from 4 to 9 p.m. for artisan vendors, food trucks, a beer garden, and live music. It's open to everyone, costs nothing, and has the kind of laid-back summer energy that makes August in Bangor feel like a gift. Bring a lawn chair and stay a while.

If you're in the mood for something bigger, Zach Top plays the Maine Savings Amphitheater Saturday night at 7 p.m. He's one of the most talked-about names in country music right now, and the Amp is one of the best outdoor venues in New England. Doors open at 5:30.

Dave Attell brings his stand-up to the Cross Insurance Center Saturday at 8 p.m. Attell is one of the sharpest comics working today, the kind of guy who makes you laugh and then feel slightly guilty about it. Tickets are still available.

Saturday evening also brings the Mount Hope Cemetery Walking Tour at 6 p.m. The Bangor Historical Society leads these guided walks through one of the most beautiful and storied cemeteries in New England. It's part history lesson, part neighborhood stroll, and it is genuinely interesting. Good for all ages.

Sunday is quieter, and better for it. The Bangor Farmers Market runs from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and then 2 Feet Brewing hosts their weekly Community Jam from 2 to 5 p.m. Grab a pint, listen to whoever shows up to play, and call it a weekend.

If you've never had a bowl of gumbo on the Bangor Waterfront, you're missing something.

Ca C'est Bon has been parked on the waterfront all summer, and the season won't last much longer. Stephen Cousineau moved to Bangor from Louisiana and spent decades cooking Cajun food before he finally decided to do it professionally. He started with a Sunday takeout kitchen in Veazie in January 2023 and rolled into a full food truck by summer. The name means "that's good" in French, and it earns it.

The menu is the real deal: gumbo, jambalaya, shrimp etouffée, po' boys, muffalettas, red beans and rice. For dessert, bread pudding with bourbon sauce or pecan pralines. Cousineau puts it simply: "A good gumbo has a way of taking you back to New Orleans, if you have ever visited there."

That's exactly what it tastes like. Something this far from Louisiana has no business being this authentic, and that's the whole point.

They're on the waterfront at 10 Front Street. The truck season winds down as fall comes in, so if you've been meaning to go, this weekend is a fine time to stop putting it off.

Lyndee Waldbauer moved to Maine from Maryland five years ago, spent time in the nonprofit sector, got her real estate license, and kept finding herself planning custom events for other people. At some point, she decided to build a business around it.

That business is The Belle of Belgrade, a converted event bus she launched in March 2025. Part luxury transport, part mobile experience company, part connector of people and places. She runs Book Crawls with local authors, Brewery Crawls, Plant Hops, and adult camps. The bus also doubles as a mobile bridal suite for weddings. Every trip is designed to pull people deeper into small-town Maine and the businesses that make it worth visiting.

This spring, Waldbauer won the 2026 Upstart Maine Business Showcase, the organization's top prize for emerging Maine entrepreneurs. She said winning meant "there is space for me in the entrepreneurial world." That's a pretty grounded thing to say for someone running a converted bus full of book lovers through the Belgrade Lakes.

She's based in central Maine, and her network reaches all across the state. Worth following if you care about what it looks like to build something genuinely local.

Hundreds of veterans connected with housing resources, VA and community benefits, healthcare services, and employment opportunities at the Homeless Veterans Mobile Stand Down this week. The free outdoor event, held at the Tri-County Career Center on Oak Street, brought together service providers from across the region to make sure no veteran had to search alone. A good reminder of what this community shows up for.

The University of Maine is going to 3D-print nine homes for people experiencing homelessness in Greater Bangor. That sentence is real.

UMaine's Advanced Structures and Composites Center, the same lab behind the world's largest 3D printer and the BioHome3D prototype, is partnering with Penquis to build a small neighborhood of 600-square-foot, single-bedroom homes using recycled sawmill waste as the printing material. The project has $7 million in combined funding, including $4 million in federal dollars secured by Senator Susan Collins.

The location hasn't been finalized yet (North Brewer was previously considered), and the construction timeline is still being confirmed. And the technology itself has been in development for years.

What matters this week is that the project is officially moving forward, with real money and real partners behind it. Nine families in greater Bangor will have homes built from Maine trees, made by Maine researchers, in a Maine neighborhood. That's the kind of story this city deserves to hear on a Friday morning.

Saturday: Blast Off Bash at the Cole Land Transportation Museum from 9 a.m. to noon. STEM activities for kids. Free and fun.

Monday: Crime and Punishment in America, a documentary screening at the Gracie Theatre at 7 p.m., is free to attend and includes a panel discussion afterward. Worth your Monday night.

Also Monday: Chimera Coffee hosts trivia from 7 to 8:30 p.m. A good warmup if you're going to the documentary and then need somewhere to argue about it.
