A note from the editor

Hey, neighbor.

Summer hit its stride this week, and Bangor is showing up for it. There's art to see, food to find, a local to meet, and at least one reason to get out of the house this weekend. Let's get into it.

Ken, the editor

THIS WEEKEND IN BANGOR

  • The street is the gallery this Saturday.

The Downtown Bangor Summer Sidewalk Art Festival takes over Harlow Street, Central Street, and Norumbega Parkway on Saturday, July 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It's free, it's all-ages, and it pulls in more than 100 jury-selected Maine artists, which means the work is the real deal, not just a crafts fair.

You'll find fine art, jewelry, ceramics, home goods, and handmade items from artists who actually live and work here. There's a main stage with live music running all day and a lineup of free kids' activities so you can actually stop and look at things without chasing anyone.

Bring your appetite, too. Food trucks will be on site.

No tickets, no registration. Just show up.

  • Also this weekend: make the drive to Rockland.

The North Atlantic Blues Festival is one of those events Mainers don't skip. This year it's back at the Public Landing in Rockland on July 11 and 12, overlooking the harbor, with national blues acts on the main stage. It's about 90 minutes from Bangor and absolutely worth the trip. Tickets available at northatlanticbluesfestival.com.

  • The Night Circus — Saturday, July 11 at 8 p.m. | 128 Main St, Suite B

After the art festival wraps up, the night has something else in store. Eye Candy Dance and Fitness Studio is putting on The Night Circus at 128 Main Street, and it's exactly what it sounds like: low lights, electric energy, and performers doing things you didn't know human bodies could do. Daring acrobatics, aerial acts, flow arts, and more. The kind of show you talk about afterward.

Tickets are $15 presale and $20 at the door. Get them at square.link/u/ZLAzPZzs. This one is 18 and up.

MJ's Italian Bistro & Catering | 16 Union Street

That corner at 16 Union Street has seen a lot of chapters. The Waterfront. Legends. Carolina's, where Mark Greenleaf served the city for more than 20 years. Then Salt North Taproom, which came in fast and closed in May after a messy run. Then MJ's Catering, which stepped in this spring to feed concert crowds heading to Maine Savings Amphitheater.

Now there's a new chapter, and it's Italian.

MJ's Italian Bistro & Catering is coming, with a sit-down dinner menu that Bangor has been missing for a while: lasagna, chicken parm, seafood pasta, toasted ravioli, calamari fra diavolo, homemade meatballs, Tuscan grilled steak, and weekly chef's specials. Thursday through Saturday, 4 to 9 p.m.

The space also handles events, corporate dinners, weddings, reunions, baby showers, you name it. Indoor and outdoor options.

This is the same kitchen that was carrying over Carolina's recipes for concert nights. Now they're going full restaurant. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for the opening date.

Megan Crochere | Eye Candy Dance & Fitness Studio, Downtown Bangor

When Megan Crochere opened Eye Candy Dance & Fitness Studio in downtown Bangor, she wasn't just opening a dance studio. She was making a bet that this city had people who wanted to move their bodies and not feel judged doing it.

She was right.

Eye Candy offers belly dancing, burlesque, hip-hop, hula hooping, yoga, and more, all in a space built around the idea that you don't need experience, a certain body type, or a reason beyond wanting to show up. Megan calls it finding your tribe. A lot of her students call it the only workout they've actually stuck with.

"When you come to something new, it's really intimidating," she says. "We've created a space where everyone is welcome."

This Saturday, she and her students take that energy public. The Night Circus at 128 Main Street is Eye Candy's production: an 18+ show full of aerial acts, acrobatics, flow arts, and performance that comes from the same studio where people walk in nervous and leave feeling like themselves.

If you've been curious about what Eye Candy is, Saturday night is a good place to start. Find them at eyecandybangor.com.

He's also a veteran, which matters this year in particular, with parade organizers pushing for a bigger military presence to mark the country's 250th. Leading the parade on America's 250th birthday feels like the right way to close out a career like his.

Bangor Public Library is teaching people how to turn off their AI.

In a move that is either quietly radical or simply practical depending on who you ask, librarians at the Bangor Public Library have been helping patrons understand the AI assistants built into their phones and devices, and how to opt out of them if they want to. No agenda, no lecture. Just people helping people figure out what's actually running on their devices. That's a public library doing exactly what a public library should do.

Little robots are coming to audit Bangor's sidewalks.

City of Bangor Facebook

The city has partnered with Daxbot, an Oregon-based company, to roll small robots through Bangor neighborhoods over the coming months. Their job is to measure 150 miles of sidewalks, curb ramps, and crosswalks and help the city figure out which ones need the most attention. It sounds like a sci-fi detail, and it kind of is, and it's also just good infrastructure work. The robots do the measuring. The city does the fixing. Everyone walks a little easier.
