A note from the editor
Happy Friday, Bangor.
Mid-July is here, and the city is in full swing. There's a couple of big shows on the waterfront this weekend, a Sunday market worth getting out of bed for, and two restaurants that have quietly become part of the downtown fabric. Plus, a woman who's been showing up for Bangor's most vulnerable neighbors, night after night, with nothing but a vest and a warm word.
Let's get into it.
Ken, the editor

THIS WEEKEND IN BANGOR
Saturday night belongs to Caamp.
The folk-leaning, feel-good Ohio duo plays Maine Savings Amphitheater this Saturday, July 18, at 7 p.m. If you've never heard Caamp, picture campfire songs that somehow have hundreds of millions of streams. They're the kind of band that sounds exactly right with the Penobscot in the background. Opening act is Hannah Cohen, who's worth showing up early for. Tickets start at $48 and are still available through Ticketmaster and StubHub.
Sunday morning: the Farmers Market is calling.
The Bangor Farmers Market runs every Sunday at Abbot Square on Harlow Street, right across from the Bangor Public Library. Peak summer means peak market, and right now that means fresh berries, greens, bread, pastries, locally roasted coffee, and flowers. Bring a bag. Show up hungry.
And if you want something quieter:
The Zillman Art Museum at UMaine has five new exhibitions running through September 5, and it's open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free to visit. Worth a stop.

This is a week that earns its place on the calendar.
On one end, TOTO and Christopher Cross are sharing a stage at the waterfront Thursday night. On the other, a group of Bangor High School students named Flōrentis are playing a free rock show at the library Wednesday afternoon. Somewhere in the middle, PanStorm is filling West Market Square with steel pan and soca for the second Thursday in a row. That's the kind of range that keeps things interesting around here.
Add in Caamp Saturday, Weird Al's full-production comedy rock circus Sunday, and Five Finger Death Punch marking their 20th anniversary Wednesday, and you start to wonder when anyone in this city is supposed to sleep.
The rest of the week fills in nicely around the edges. The Bangor Band plays the waterfront Tuesday night. There's a SUP yoga session on the Stillwater Monday evening if you need to work something out before TOTO. And Eye Candy is doing what Eye Candy does, with classes running nearly every day.
See you out there.

Hermon Mountain, 441 Billings Rd., Hermon
This is a little different for Fork and Pint, and that's kind of the point. Hermon Mountain changed hands in the spring, and the new owners, two couples who grew up skiing the hill, have been moving fast. The lodge restaurant, Scenic Eats, is now open and serving pizza, burgers, subs, and salads.

The 18-hole disc golf course is running. A concert and events lineup is in the works. They're angling for foliage-season lift rides with cider and doughnuts in the fall. It's a $2.1 million bet that a little ski hill 10 minutes from downtown can be worth showing up to all year. So far, it looks like a good bet.
The Rood's Room, Downtown Bangor

The former Evenrood's space has been quietly running as The Rood's Room since February, and if you haven't made it in yet, it's worth fixing that. It's an intimate cocktail lounge, comfortable and easy, with food to go alongside. The kind of place that feels like it's been there for years even though it hasn't.

Anna Phillips, Bangor Street Pastors and Dignity First
Most Friday and Saturday nights, Anna Phillips is somewhere on the streets of Bangor, wearing a blue vest and having conversations with people that most of us walk past.
She's the chapter coordinator of Greater Bangor Street Pastors, the only active American affiliate of the international Street Pastors network. The chapter launched in 2014 and has leaned more and more into serving Bangor's unhoused community. Anna is also board president of Dignity First, a local nonprofit that just secured $2 million in federal funding to begin work on a tiny home village for people experiencing homelessness.
This isn't crisis intervention. It's the "ministry of presence," as the organization calls it, showing up, listening, and being a consistent face in a part of the city that often feels invisible in conversations about Bangor's future. Anna is doing the opposite of ignoring it.

Penquis is getting close to opening the Bright Beginnings Child Development Center, and it's a big deal for this city. The $9.3 million facility on Hillside Avenue near Broadway will serve more than 200 children, from infants through preschool age, with 16 classrooms and a mix of federal, state, and city funding behind it. The grand opening is planned for September. Bangor has a serious childcare access problem, and this is one of the most meaningful steps taken toward fixing it in years.

You walk past him on Main Street all the time. But do you actually know how tall he is? How tall is Bangor's Paul Bunyan statue?

Bangor State Fair runs July 30 through August 8 at Bass Park. Demolition derby, tractor pulls, antique cars, and all the rest. Ten-day passes are $100. Mark it.
Bangor Band at the Waterfront, Tuesday July 21, 7 p.m. Free. Bring a chair.
Bangor Farmers Market every Sunday at Abbot Square, Harlow Street.
